In a historic move, the University of Southampton has become the first UK university to establish a campus in India under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The Indian Ministry of Education recently issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the university, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey towards internationalizing its education system, a core aim of NEP 2020.
Ranked 80th in the QS World Rankings 2025, the University of Southampton’s entry into India is set to enrich the educational landscape by offering Indian students global exposure while receiving education firmly rooted in Indian values. This step also represents the first time that a foreign university has been granted an LoI under the University Grants Commission’s regulations for setting up campuses of international institutions in India.
University of Southampton’s Presence in India
The University of Southampton has been active in India for nearly five decades, cultivating deep and mutually beneficial partnerships. Now, with a campus set to open in Gurugram, the university will begin offering courses in 2025, providing Indian students with an opportunity to access world-class education without leaving their home country.

In the QS World Rankings 2025, the University of Southampton holds the 80th position with an overall score of 64.1. It scored 50.1 in academic reputation and 40.7 for its faculty-to-student ratio, making it a competitive institution on the global stage. The university is recognized for its excellence in various subjects, with several programs ranked among the top 100 globally.
Popular Courses at the University of Southampton
The University of Southampton offers over 300-degree programs across a wide range of disciplines, including Engineering, Medicine, Finance, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Film Studies, Music, and Psychology. In the QS World Rankings 2024, the university achieved global recognition for six subjects within the top 50, including Nursing, which ranked 6th globally, and Archaeology, which secured the 33rd spot. Other top subjects include Earth and Marine Sciences, Statistics and Operational Research, Geology, and Geophysics.
Additionally, twelve other subjects made it into the global top 100, such as Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and Medicine, further solidifying the university’s academic reputation.
Scholarships for Indian Students at the University of Southampton
Indian students aiming to pursue higher education at the University of Southampton can benefit from several scholarship opportunities. Two prominent scholarships available for Indian students are:
- Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Loan Scholarship: This loan-based scholarship is open to Indian nationals under 30 years of age who have graduated from accredited Indian universities. Students planning to pursue postgraduate studies at top-ranking institutions starting in Fall 2024 are eligible to apply.
- University of Southampton – GREAT Scholarships 2023: In partnership with the British Council, this scholarship offers Indian students £10,000 off their tuition fees. Eligible courses include MSc Economics, MSc Actuarial Sciences, MSc Optical Engineering, and any one-year taught master’s program within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
