Basavaraj Horatti, an MLC and the previous head of the Karnataka Legislative Council, has accused government officials of being at fault for the issues and misunderstandings at the State’s Department of Education.

Friday in Hubballi, Mr. Horatti took part in the “Meet the Press” event hosted by the Dharwad District Union of Working Journalists (DDUWJ). He spoke extensively about his transition from a physical education teacher to an MLC and his record-breaking victory for the eighth time in a row.

According to Mr. Horatti, if the officials had carried out their jobs properly, the controversy over textbook rewriting would not have arisen.

Mr. Horatti responded to a question by saying that nobody could make the Education Department problem-free. “No one can guarantee that he will fix every issue with the department because issues keep coming up one after another,” In actuality, managing the education department is quite difficult, he claimed.

The former minister, though, advised accepting mistakes made and working to make them right. He declared that people with a passion for the subject and a dedication to learning ought to be given the portfolio. However, he refrained from commenting on Minister B.C. Nagesh’s performance.

Mr. Horatti said that 70% of the educational institutions had become commercial, leading to further problems and reduced quality of education. Commenting on the race for marks, he said: “Nowadays, everyone is after marks instead of a value and skill-based education. Parents are also preparing their children for the marks’ race. There is a need for value-based education. The problems are never ending because mistakes are being committed by officials, parents, and also elected representatives,” he said.

He acknowledged that it would be challenging to implement a significant reform in the educational system, but he pledged to make sincere attempts to bring up real concerns about education and identify solutions. In the upcoming legislative session, he vowed to bring up the issues of pensions, teacher transfers, and the security of public school facilities.

He did, however, make it clear that he had not made any demands for a ministerial or Legislative Council chairmanship. But he said that if given any responsibility, he would strive to do the position justice.
