Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced this year’s National Institute Ranking Framework, saying that a strong and consistent system for evaluation, certification, and ranking will play a significant role in raising the quality of higher education (NIRF).

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), which was introduced in November 2015, assigns grades to Indian educational institutions based on five broad criteria: teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practise; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.

Even though the NIRF is a very new organisation, the fact that only universities and colleges with an NAAC grade or NIRF ranking qualify for inclusion on the University Grants Commission list for receiving funding indicates the relevance of the NIRF.

IIT Madras’ Domination Continues

For the fourth year in a row, The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, maintained its position as India’s top university. Additionally, it maintained its position as the best engineering school for the sixth consecutive year. The same as last year, IIT Madras placed second in the “Research Institutions” category, trailing IISc Bangalore.

IITs Dominate Top Ranks

The collection of elite engineering schools in India known as the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) continued to dominate the top 25 rankings in the “Engineering” category. 14 of the top 25 engineering universities belonged to the IIT ecosystem for the third year in a row. In addition, the IITs claimed seven of the top ten spots.

IISc, JNU Top Two Universities

For a seventh year running, The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore has been ranked as India’s top university. On the other side, Jawaharlal Nehru University remained in second place for a sixth year running. Third-placed Jamia Millia Islamia advanced three spots, while fourth-placed Jadavpur University advanced four spots.

Delhi Colleges Outrank Others

For the sixth year in a row, Miranda House was named the best college in India. Delhi was home to 16 of the top 30 colleges in India. In fact, Miranda House, Hindu College (2), LSR (5), Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College (7), and Kirori Mal College were five of the top 10 colleges, representing Delhi (10).

Rise In Applicants for NIRF Rankings

Since 2016, more colleges have applied overall for the NIRF rankings. According to the government, 4,786 institutions submitted applications for this year’s “Overall,” category-specific, and/or domain-specific rankings. From 2,426 in 2016 to 4,786 in 2022, there have been an increase of nearly 97% in the number of universities requesting rankings.
