New Delhi: The Delhi School of Economics (DSE), University of Delhi celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Inauguration and Annual Day on May 2, 2023. Shri Suman Bery, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, Government of India and Dr P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Government of India were the Chief Guests on this occasion. Prof Yogesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi presided over the function that was organised by Director, DSE, Professor Pami Dua. The DSE with its constituent departments – Economics, Geography and Sociology- is a leading postgraduate institution of academic excellence in India.
In his Diamond Jubilee Inaugural Address, Shri Suman Bery, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, Government of India, emphasized the critical role of socioeconomic research in premier institutions like DSE. He also underlined the crucial linkage between the role of socioeconomic research and the role of the state, and discussed topics such as cooperative federalism and competitive federalism, providing insights into how to achieve better coordination between the center and state/UTs in the development of policy. He also stressed the importance of institutions like DSE in promoting socio-economic research and facilitating its practical application for the benefit of society as a whole.
Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, in his Diamond Jubilee inaugural address, highlighted the areas where the Indian Government has created an appropriate policy environment in the past eight years of governance like promoting public and private capital formation, increasing employment rate, appropriate technology adoption and digitalization, inclusive approach to development and effective implementation of programmes. He underscored the role of DSE in enabling a research-oriented debate and discussion environment, which provides the groundwork for economic reforms in the country.
Prof. Yogesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi congratulated DSE for its academic excellence and accomplishments for the last 74 years. The Vice-Chancellor inspired the faculty, scholars and students of DSE to provide intellectual support to the country in terms of providing impact assessment of government schemes, suggesting course correction for better policy implementation and identifying priority and futuristic sectors for enhancing the growth rate of the economy.
Professor Pami Dua, Director, DSE articulated the vision of DSE’s Founder-Director Professor V.K.R.V. Rao to provide high quality education and at the same time instil in the students a spirit of social consciousness. She mentioned that this vision is truly actualized through the hard work and earnest engagement of generations of its faculty, non-teaching staff, scholars, students and alumni, who persevered to add glory to the institution and make Delhi School of Economics an exemplar centre of excellence for teaching and research.
The Diamond Jubilee Inaugural Function and Annual Day Celebrations also included an award ceremony to honor distinguished alumni, as well as distinguished retired faculty members and non-teaching staff.
