Get ready for a transformative academic experience as the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) gears up to introduce updated textbooks for the 2024-25 school year. Let’s explore the forthcoming changes and what they mean for students nationwide.
Class 3 Textbooks Underway
Textbook drafts for Class 3, including English, Hindi, Urdu, Maths, and ‘The World Around Us’ (formerly known as Environmental Studies), are currently being proofread and edited by NCERT. These textbooks are expected to be available for distribution soon.
Class 6 Updates
For Class 6, textbook drafts for Maths, Science, and languages (English, Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit) are also in progress. There’s a possibility of merging History, Geography, and Political Science into a single Social Science textbook. However, the final decision on this merge is pending as drafts for these subjects are yet to be received.
Editorial Process
To expedite the process, editors are now tasked with proofreading entire textbooks within a shorter timeframe. Previously, each editor would review 20 to 30 pages daily, but now they are instructed to complete proofreading for books of 200 pages or more within two to three days.
Timeline Concerns
Despite initial plans to release textbooks for all grades, it appears that only Class 3 and 6 will receive updates in 2024-25. Textbooks for other classes might be developed in subsequent years. The NCERT emphasizes the importance of thorough research and modification for senior classes, indicating a cautious approach to curriculum updates.
Historical Context
The evolution of NCERT textbooks has seen multiple revisions over the years. From controversies surrounding perceived ideological biases to efforts to streamline syllabi, the content of these textbooks has undergone significant changes. The latest updates will likely continue to shape the narrative, particularly in subjects like history, political science, and sociology.
