The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is poised to introduce sweeping changes to the academic structure for secondary and higher secondary education, as per a recent report. These proposed reforms include a transition to studying three languages and incorporating seven additional subjects for Class 10 students, while Class 12 students may face an expanded curriculum with six papers.
Transition to Three Languages in Class 10:
Under the proposed changes, CBSE suggests a shift from studying two languages to three in Class 10. Significantly, at least two of these languages must be native to India, aligning with the board’s emphasis on promoting linguistic diversity and cultural inclusivity among students.
Expansion of Curriculum for Class 10:
In addition to the language transition, CBSE proposes the inclusion of seven additional subjects for Class 10 students. These subjects, spanning mathematics, computational thinking, social science, science, art education, physical education and well-being, vocational education, and environmental education, aim to provide a holistic learning experience and equip students with diverse skill sets.
Enhanced Academic Rigor for Class 12:
For Class 12 students, the proposed reforms entail an expanded curriculum, with the introduction of six papers instead of the existing five. This adjustment reflects CBSE’s commitment to fostering comprehensive learning outcomes and preparing students for higher education and professional endeavors.
Alignment with National Education Policy 2020:
CBSE’s proposed academic overhaul is in line with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy 2020. By introducing a diverse range of subjects and emphasizing multilingualism, the board aims to create a robust educational framework that nurtures holistic development and prepares students for the challenges of the 21st century.
Stakeholder Feedback and Implementation Timeline:
The proposed reforms were communicated to all heads of CBSE-affiliated institutions, soliciting feedback by December 5, 2023. This collaborative approach underscores CBSE’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making process. Moving forward, the board is expected to evaluate the feedback received and chart a roadmap for the effective implementation of the proposed academic changes.
