The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted ex-post facto approval to the Migration and Mobility Agreement between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Italian Republic. Under this agreement, Indian students completing their degrees in Italy will now have the opportunity to stay in the country for an additional 12 months, expanding their post-study options.
Key Agreement Details
As per the agreement, Indian students seeking initial professional experience after completing academic or vocational training in Italy may be granted temporary residence for up to 12 months. This move expands the eligibility beyond those holding a master’s degree or PhD, providing more Indian students the chance to gain practical experience in Italy.
Significance for Indian Students
The extension offers a valuable opportunity for Indian students to gather real-world professional experience, enhancing their skill set and contributing to their overall career development. The move is expected to strengthen cultural and educational ties between India and Italy.
Current Student Presence and Future Prospects
In 2022, a total of 5,897 Indian students were present in Italy on study visas. This agreement opens up new avenues for Indian students looking to extend their stay in Italy post-education, fostering a positive environment for academic and professional growth.
Reserved Quotas for Indian Workers
Apart from student-centric provisions, the Italian government has reserved quotas for non-seasonal and seasonal Indian workers under the current Flows Decree. This initiative aims to enhance collaboration and opportunities for Indian professionals in Italy.
