Studying abroad in Canada opens up a world of opportunities for Indian students, but navigating the study permit application process can be daunting. Here’s a simplified guide on the necessary documents and rules for obtaining a study permit in Canada.
Letter of Acceptance (LOA)
When applying for a study permit, students must include a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from their chosen school. This letter can be in either its original form or as an electronic copy.
Conditional Acceptance
If admitted conditionally, students must complete requisite courses before starting the main study program. A study permit will be issued for the duration of these courses plus one year. After being accepted into the main program, a new study permit application is required for an extended stay.
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
Most students need to submit a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province or territory where they intend to study. However, this requirement doesn’t apply to those pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees.
Exemptions from PAL Requirement
Students are exempt from submitting a PAL if they fall under certain categories:
- Applying for a study permit extension.
- Holding a work permit.
- Being a visiting or exchange student at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- Completing a prerequisite course or program.
- Having a temporary resident permit or removal order.
- Being a family member of certain foreign nationals residing in Canada.
Mandatory Documents
Applicants must have:
- A valid passport or travel document.
- Two recent passport-size photos.
Financial Support Proof
Students must demonstrate financial support, with a minimum of CAN $20,635 per year (excluding tuition fees). Quebec has separate financial requirements.
Additional Documents
Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may also need:
- A letter of explanation.
- A medical exam.
- A custodian declaration (for minors).
- Other relevant documents.
