The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK), has joined hands with InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a renowned mobile and video technology research and development company, to pioneer the advancement of 6G enabling technologies. This partnership aims to revolutionize wireless standards, impacting a range of futuristic applications, including the metaverse, holographic communications, and digital twins.
Unlocking the Potential of 6G
As part of this collaboration, InterDigital will sponsor research and innovation at IIT-K to propel the development of Extreme MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) systems. These cutting-edge technologies are poised to achieve remarkable spectrum efficiency and expand network coverage, essential for the successful deployment of 6G networks.
Prof. S Ganesh, Officiating Director at IIT Kanpur, emphasized the pivotal role of academia in shaping 6G technology. He underscored that this partnership aligns seamlessly with India’s ambition to lead the 6G revolution, highlighted by the release of the Bharat 6G Vision Document and the establishment of the 6G R&D Test Bed.

Both nations recognize the significance of joint research and development in shaping the 6G landscape, with IIT Kanpur acknowledged as a key collaborator.
Milind Kulkarni, VP and Head of Wireless Labs at InterDigital, expressed pride in formalizing the partnership. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in fueling innovation, underlining InterDigital’s commitment to working with leading universities and institutions in India to contribute to wireless standards bodies like 3GPP and TSDSI.
