In an impressive development, Indian universities have demonstrated their academic excellence in the 2024 World University Rankings. A record-breaking 91 institutions from India have secured positions, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s count of 75. This ascent has propelled India from the sixth to the fourth best-represented nation in the global rankings.
Leading the Charge: IISc’s Remarkable Return
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore has reclaimed its position as the top-ranking Indian institution globally. A noteworthy achievement for IISc is its return to the global top 250 list, a feat last accomplished in 2017. This accomplishment underscores India’s steadfast commitment to achieving excellence in higher education.
Diverse Excellence: Top Performers in Various Bands
Beyond IISc, several other prominent Indian institutions have earned their place on the global academic map. Universities such as Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences have secured positions in the 501-600 band. Notably, Aligarh Muslim University and Bharathiar University have made substantial progress, transitioning from the 801-1000 band to the 601-800 band.
IITs Shine on the Global Stage
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) continue to excel on the international stage. IIT Guwahati and the Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad have surged into the world’s top 800 universities, demonstrating remarkable progress from their previous ranking in the 1001-1200 band. Additionally, the Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, has made an impressive debut in the 601-800 band.
While India’s academic community celebrates this remarkable achievement, it’s important to note that some top IITs continue to express reservations about the rankings, raising questions about transparency and adherence to standards. Nevertheless, India’s presence in global higher education is on the rise, with institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Panjab University, and Vellore Institute of Technology making steady strides in gaining international recognition.
