In a recent address at the inauguration of Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized the need for extending higher legal education to remote rural areas. He underscored that such an expansion would ensure that students from small towns have equitable access to opportunities in the legal profession.
Empowering Rural Talents
CJI Chandrachud highlighted the transformative potential of technology in bridging the gap between urban and rural education. He pointed out that the current legal education system tends to favor English-speaking urban students, thereby marginalizing those from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Stressing the importance of inclusivity, he urged law colleges and universities to design programs that cater to students from various socio-economic backgrounds.
Language Accessibility and Legal Empowerment
Acknowledging the linguistic barrier faced by many aspiring lawyers, CJI Chandrachud lauded initiatives like the Bhashini software, which translates Supreme Court judgments into Hindi. He emphasized the significance of providing legal resources in regional languages to facilitate access to justice for all citizens, particularly those who are not proficient in English.
Promoting Excellence in Legal Education
CJI Chandrachud called for a reevaluation of traditional methods of legal education, advocating for inclusivity in moot courts, internships, and competitions. He urged universities to adopt Hindi as the medium of instruction to empower students from Uttar Pradesh and other Hindi-speaking regions, thereby fostering excellence in legal education.
Role of Lawyers in Nation-Building
Highlighting the pivotal role of lawyers in shaping society, CJI Chandrachud emphasized their contribution to nation-building throughout India’s history. He emphasized the diverse responsibilities of lawyers in representing individuals and entities, protecting rights, and advocating for marginalized communities.
Dignitaries Address the Gathering
The inauguration event witnessed addresses from eminent personalities including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Justice Manoj Misra of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice Arun Bhansali, Uttar Pradesh Advocate General Ajay Kumar Mishra, and University Vice-Chancellor Usha Tandon.
