The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, intends to make a caste awareness course required for all students. It is one of the projects undertaken by the institute’s SC/ST Cell, which considers sensitization to be a step toward inclusivity.

In order to better understand the challenges that the students encounter due to caste differences, the institute’s SC/ST unit recently conducted a few surveys.

According to The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, some survey findings called for increased awareness-raising activities and the introduction of a required academic course on caste and racial discrimination along the lines of the required course on gender sensitization that was introduced last year.

The nature and substance of the caste awareness training are still up for debate, according to sources . Professor Bharat Adsul from the department of computer science and engineering served as the convener of the SC/ST cell at IIT Bombay, and Professor Madhu N Belur from the department of electrical engineering served as the co-convener.

More awareness-raising activities should be held, and a mandatory academic course on caste and racial discrimination should be developed along the lines of the mandatory gender sensitization course that was introduced last year.

The caste awareness course’s nature and content are up for debate. The cell responded to inquiries with a written response that read, “At IIT-Bombay, it was noticed that additional sensitization activities will enhance inclusivity and aid in lowering complaints. For instance, raising people’s awareness of the racial and caste-based insults that have crept into common speech will boost comradery anywhere they are spoken.

The students who took part in the open house discussion claimed that there is no uniformity in how different people experience caste, as it can range from simple taunts about how students admitted on reservation seats are “killers of merit” to actually making such students doubt their own abilities and causing self-doubt.
