IIT Madras: Global Njord Challenge of 2023, hosted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology was held in Norway, where the IIT Delhi team secured 3rd position. This annual event has many countries participating in this competition including the Indian student team from IIT Madras. The Competition was participated by the top Universities of the world ranging from MIT to IIT.
IIT Madras team secured 3rd position
The participants were required to build an autonomous ship. For this event, the first prize was awarded to Turkey. The second position was awarded to Portugal and the third Prize was awarded to the Indian team. The guidelines for judging were “ ability to autonomously navigate in a channel marked by navigational buoys, to dock the vessel autonomously, ability to autonomously detect and avoid dynamic obstacles.” said the IIT Madras student, while speaking about the three categories in which the judgment was made. The IIT team that secured the third prize was a team of four, Ibrahim M, Amarnath Singh, Akash Vijayakumar, and Rakshin Ramesh. Together, they represent the IIT Madras’ Department of Ocean Engineering’s Marine Autonomous Vessels and are mentored by their faculty members, Abhilash Sharma Somayajula and MA Atmanand. Apart from securing third position, the team also won the Sustainability Award at the Global Njord Challenge. Along with this, the Aritra team also won a cash prize of 10,000 rupees.
V Kamakoti suggested Aritra to form a start-up
Amidst the win for the team, IIT Madras as a university felt a lot of pride. The director of the university, V Kamakoti lauded the students for their creativity and hard work. In fact, he suggested that the ship created by the students could be commercialized. He said that, “There exists an opportunity for Indian industry and startups to take this up on a commercial basis under the ‘Make in India’ program of the Government of India.” On top of that, he said the Aritra team, themselves should start a startup by making use of their development.
