Starting from 2025, the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will implement a significant change by holding two Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations each year, according to an announcement by Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma. This decision is set to offer students an additional opportunity to clear their Class 10 exams.
Cabinet Approval for MBOSE Regulation Amendment
The Meghalaya government recently gave the green light to amend the MBOSE Regulation for the SSLC Examination, 2011. This approval, granted earlier this month, paves the way for conducting two Class 10 exams annually. The first round of exams is expected to be scheduled in February or early March, while the second round, aimed at giving students who fail in some or all subjects another chance, will be held in May.
Aligning with the National Education Policy
Minister Sangma emphasized that this move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP), aiming to minimize the time lost between exam attempts and provide students with a quicker path to success. This change reflects the state’s commitment to adapting educational practices to better meet the needs of students.
Compulsory Six Subject Pass from 2026
In another significant decision, the cabinet approved the removal of the ‘best of five papers’ option, effective from the 2026-2027 academic year. This means that starting in 2026, students will need to pass all six subjects in the SSLC examination to qualify.
Additional Approvals by the Cabinet
Apart from these education-related changes, the Meghalaya cabinet also approved the Service Rules for the Meghalaya Public School Service, the Meghalaya Subordinate Water Resources Engineering Service Rules, 2024, and the Farmers Empowerment Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024. These approvals mark a continued effort to update and improve governance in various sectors of the state.
