Madhya Pradesh government has unveiled an innovative initiative, ‘Bag Less Day’, aimed at alleviating student stress and promoting holistic development in schools across the state. Starting from the upcoming academic session of 2024-25, this program will provide students from classes 1 to 12 with a day free from the burden of carrying school bags, fostering a conducive environment for recreational activities and cultural engagement. Here’s a breakdown of the key aspects of this groundbreaking initiative.
Bag Weight Guidelines
The government has issued specific guidelines regarding the maximum weight of school bags based on the students’ classes:
- Classes 1 and 2: 1.6–2.2 kg
- Classes 3 to 5: 1.7–2.5 kg
- Classes 6 and 7: 2–3 kg
- Class 8: 2.5–4 kg
- Classes 9 and 10: 2.5–4.5 kg
For classes 11 and 12, the weight limit will be determined by the school management committee according to the students’ chosen streams.
Implementation and Enforcement
The Madhya Pradesh government has mandated the strict implementation of the school bag policy, ensuring compliance with the prescribed weight limits. This directive will be enforced rigorously starting from the next academic session to alleviate the physical burden on students and promote their overall well-being.
Bag Less Day Activities
On the designated Bag Less Day, students will be encouraged to participate in a variety of activities aimed at reducing stress and enhancing their enjoyment of the school environment. These activities may include:
- Sports activities
- Games
- Cultural programs
- Music sessions
- Recreational pursuits
The objective is to create an atmosphere where students view school as a source of joy and enrichment, rather than a source of stress and pressure. By providing a day dedicated to leisure and engagement, the education system aims to nurture the holistic development of students and cultivate a positive learning environment.
Minister’s Perspective
School Education Minister Uday Pratap Singh emphasized the importance of prioritizing students’ well-being by addressing the issue of heavy school bags. He underscored the government’s commitment to providing relief to students and creating a conducive learning environment conducive to their overall growth and development.
In conclusion, Madhya Pradesh’s introduction of the Bag Less Day initiative signifies a progressive step towards holistic education and student welfare. By promoting a healthy balance between academics and extracurricular activities, the state aims to foster well-rounded individuals prepared for success in both their personal and professional lives.
