The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has announced changes in Class 10 and 12 state board exams from academic session 2023-24. The changes have been introduced keeping in mind the National Education Policy 2020.
More objective questions, fewer descriptive questions
The weightage of objective questions has been increased from 20 to 30 per cent, while the weightage of descriptive questions has been reduced from 30 to 20 per cent. This is likely to make the exam pattern more student-friendly, as objective questions are generally easier to answer.
Supplementary exams for Class 12 science students
Class 12 science students can now take one or all supplementary exams in June-July to improve their results. The best of two will be considered. This is a good move, as it will give students a chance to improve their grades and get into better colleges.
More subjects for supplementary exams for Class 10 and Class 12 general stream students
Class 10 students can now appear for supplementary exams in three subjects, instead of two. Class 12 general stream students can now appear in supplementary exams for two subjects, instead of one. This will give students more flexibility and reduce the pressure of having to pass all subjects in the first attempt.
Changes in Class 12 science descriptive questions
Instead of internal options within questions, students will be given general options from within the question paper. This is likely to make the descriptive questions more challenging, but it will also test students’ understanding of the subject in a more comprehensive way.
