On October 7, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) took a momentous step forward by inaugurating its innovative School of Sustainability. This transformative institution is committed to advancing sustainability education and research. The School of Sustainability will offer interdisciplinary courses, drive collaborative research efforts, and provide a platform for showcasing technologies and policies aimed at fostering sustainability.
A Centre of Excellence in Sustainability Education and Research
The IIT Madras School of Sustainability has been strategically conceptualized as a Centre of Excellence, uniting faculty members from diverse departments and research centers within the institute. Its primary mission is to educate students in the principles of sustainability, offering minor courses and interdisciplinary master’s programs. Additionally, the school plans to extend its reach by offering capacity-building programs for professionals, available both online and in-person.
Comprehensive Approach to Sustainability
The activities of the School of Sustainability, according to an official statement from IIT Madras, will encompass a wide spectrum. This includes fundamental scientific research, technology development, the execution of real-world sustainability projects, and offering valuable policy advisory services.
In terms of academic offerings, the IIT Madras School of Sustainability is set to introduce a minor course in sustainability in 2024. Furthermore, it is actively considering the launch of an Integrated Dual Degree Program (IDDD) in Sustainability within the next three to five years.
Focused Research and Development
The school has identified four pivotal research and development domains: decarbonization, human settlements, modeling and scenario development, and behavioral and industrial change. Within these domains, it will engage in rigorous scientific research, product development, pilot projects, and policy advisory services.
