The Delhi government has recently initiated a five-day training program aimed at equipping its school teachers with the skills to identify gifted students and develop a curriculum that caters to their unique needs. This initiative, under the umbrella of “Project Abhishikt,” is designed to unlock the untapped potential of exceptional learners in Delhi’s government schools.

Training Program Under Project Abhishikt

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is spearheading the training of 104 teachers at a government school in Kalkaji. Since Tuesday, educators have been engaged in intensive sessions focused on understanding and nurturing giftedness. The primary objectives of Project Abhishikt include:

  • Identifying Gifted Learners: Teachers are being trained to recognize students with exceptional abilities, particularly those in Class 6 and Class 9, who often go unnoticed due to the common emphasis on assisting weaker students.
  • Selecting Skilled Educators: The project focuses on selecting teachers who can effectively deliver a specialized curriculum tailored to the needs of gifted students.
  • Curriculum Development: A significant part of the training involves developing a curriculum that not only meets the academic needs of these students but also challenges and nurtures their inherent talents.
  • Ensuring Effective Curriculum Delivery: The project aims to bridge the gap between the students’ current abilities and their full potential through a well-structured and efficiently delivered curriculum.

Addressing the Overlooked Needs of Gifted Students

Often, the focus in classrooms is on students who struggle academically, which can lead to the abilities of gifted students being overlooked. Project Abhishikt aims to change this dynamic by providing these students with the opportunity to excel. “The primary goal of the project is to close the gap between the current abilities of these students and their immense potential. This will be achieved by providing specialized support and a well-developed curriculum to ensure their success,” stated Nahar Singh, SCERT Joint Director.

A Strategic Approach to Enhancing Gifted Education

Launched by the Directorate of Education in collaboration with SCERT, Project Abhishikt is initially targeting 15 government schools in Delhi. The first day of the training was themed “Introduction and Understanding Giftedness,” providing teachers with foundational knowledge on the characteristics of gifted students and how to support them effectively. Following this, Wednesday’s session delved into the inception and detailed objectives of the project, setting the stage for the development of a more inclusive and effective educational approach for Delhi’s bright young minds.
