The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is launching a pilot project in its affiliated schools to test the National Credit Framework (NCrF) for grades 6, 9, and 11. This initiative, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, aims to integrate school, higher, and vocational education seamlessly.
What is the National Credit Framework (NCrF)?
The NCrF, introduced by the government last year, allows students to accumulate credits from pre-primary education to PhD level. It’s designed to merge various educational streams, enabling a smoother transition between different levels of education.
CBSE’s Pilot Programme
The CBSE has developed draft guidelines for implementing the NCrF. These guidelines have been discussed in workshops and received approval from the Union Ministry of Education. To further refine and assess their effectiveness, CBSE is initiating a pilot implementation in schools affiliated with them, starting from the academic session of 2024-2025.
How Does it Work?
- Accumulating Credits: Students can earn credits through classroom instruction, laboratory activities, projects, sports, performing arts, NCC and social work participation, vocational education, and experiential learning.
- Competency-based Learning: The focus shifts from traditional classroom education to competency and learning outcome-based education. Assessment is mandatory for earning credits across all types of learning.
Storing Credits
The credits obtained will be stored in the student’s Academic Bank of Credit (ABC). This bank will be linked to the student’s APAAR ID and DigiLocker in the future.
