The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced significant changes in assessment and evaluation methods to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Beginning with the 2024-25 academic session, Class 11 and 12 board exams will witness a shift towards more competency-based questions and fewer constructed response questions.
Key Changes in Assessment
- Competency-focused questions, such as MCQs, case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions, will now constitute 50% of the question paper, up from the previous 40%.
- Constructed response questions, including short answer and long answer types, will be reduced to 30% from the previous 40%.
- Select response type questions (MCQs) will remain unchanged at 20%.
- However, there are no alterations in the composition of question papers for year-end examinations/board exams for classes 9 and 10.
Rationale Behind the Changes
CBSE emphasized its commitment to fostering an educational environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, moving away from rote memorization.
