Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, the minister of education for Punjab, proposed the motion and stated that the state government would not permit the Center to alter the Panjab University’s nature or character.
On Thursday, the Punjab parliament adopted a resolution urging the state government to lobby the Center not to change Panjab University’s “status.” The BJP, with the support of its two MLAs Ashwani Sharma and Jangi Lal Mahajan, disagreed, questioning the validity of the proposal to transform the institution into a central university.
Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, the minister of education for Punjab, proposed the motion and stated that the state government would not permit the Center to alter the Panjab University’s nature or character.
The minister stated, “Panjab University is our heritage and it is an issue of identity for us.

“This House is concerned about the attempts being made by some vested interests to push the matter for change of status of Panjab University into a Central University on one pretext or another,” the resolution stated.”This House strongly and unanimously feels that any decision to change the character of Panjab University won’t be acceptable to the people of Punjab and therefore, strongly recommends that no change in the nature and character of this university should be considered by the government of India,” it added.
Any suggestion for the same, if it were under discussion, was to be abandoned immediately, according to the resolution. In order to avoid changing the nature and character of the Panjab University, “This House strongly recommends to the state administration to take up the matter with the central government…,” it continued.
When taking part in the conversation, BJP MLA Jangi Lal Mahajan questioned the necessity of the resolution in the absence of a proposal. Pargat Singh, a Congress MLA, backed the resolution nonetheless, arguing that PU was linked to the feelings of the people of Punjab.
Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a Congress lawmaker, claimed that the Centre was attempting to take over PU from Punjab. Amit Shah and Dharmendra Pradhan were asked to step in by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann more than a week ago to stop “any alteration in the nature and character of the Panjab University” in this situation.
