The Telangana government on Sunday imposed three days of school closures for all educational institutions from July 11 to July 13 due to the relentless rain that is hammering the state.

The declaration was made during a high-level meeting that Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao had with the officials to assess the state’s position and the government’s efforts to guard against human casualties and property damage. The CM instructed the authorities to take action in the meantime.

The choice was made after Telangana was placed on red alert by IMD. Parts of the State have been experiencing downpours for the past few days. In Telangana’s Mahbubnagar region earlier this week, a school bus carrying 30 pupils was partially submerged in a flooded street. The pupils were saved from the bus by the locals, which was eventually removed from the area.

The incident happened between Kodur and Machanpally. A private school bus was driving underneath a railroad overpass. Due to the area’s significant rains, the road was underwater. The driver attempted to manoeuvre the car through the still water beneath the bridge but got stuck in the middle.

The Chief Secretary said that heavy rains were reported in the districts of Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Siricilla, Bhupalpally and Mulugu. As the tanks, ponds and reservoirs are in spate, officials should be on high alert and see to it that sandbags are kept ready if breaches to vulnerable tanks take place, he said. People living in low-lying areas may be shifted to special camps, if necessary. Any damages to roads should be immediately repaired, he added.
