President Kovind: President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday said that higher education institutions have a great responsibility to transform sensitive youth who are cultured. He said that for this we need to fulfill the aspirations of the youth, as they are the future leaders of different walks of life. Kovind said this during a two-day conference of vice-chancellors of central universities and directors of institutions of national importance at Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

Kovind said that digital technology is expanding the boundaries of education. He said the key to achieving excellence is to harness the transformative benefits of digital technology to enrich the learning and teaching experience. Kovind said that when the pandemic threatened to derail the teaching-learning process, technology ensured continuity.

He said that no doubt there were difficulties, but it was good to see that you all provided teaching and conducted evaluation and research seamlessly. The President said that we can now make classroom learning more effective on the basis of that experience, so that students can have a complete understanding of the subject.

The President said that in order to improve the quality of education, we should consider adopting a delicate and innovative approach in the context of teaching. He said that the higher education institutions of the country have a central role, as our young citizens are not only the heirs of the past, but they will also lead India to its next golden age.

The President said, “I can say with confidence that each one of you is going to help achieve this goal. Otherwise the extraordinary development of India in recent times would not have been possible. I am sure you will keep up the good work.

The President is the visitor of 161 central institutions of higher education. A statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said that out of the 161 institutions, the heads of 53 institutions attended the conference physically, while others attended virtually.

The President said that around 2,775 Institutional Innovation Councils have been set up in higher education institutions in 28 states and six union territories to encourage start-ups and innovation. He also said that India’s ranking in the global innovation list has increased from 76 in 2014 to 46 in 2021. To improve the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in India, there is a need to encourage and streamline the process for filing for patents, he added.

During the inaugural session of the conference, the President presented the ‘Visitors Award 2020’ for Research (Biology) to Professor Mohammad Zahid Ashraf, Department of Biotechnology, Jamia Millia Islamia.
