Meghalaya: Education Minister warns teachers as they protest for 5 month’s due salary

Shillong: On Wednesday, Lahkmen Rymbui, Education Minister of Meghalaya warned of “stern action” as approximately 5,000 teachers persisted in camping near the state secretariat for the third consecutive day. Teachers agitating under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) have been demanding their 5-months due salary.

It is found that the reason behind the state government not being able to pay the salaries of teachers is that they are waiting for the central government to release the funds so that the state government can clear the pending salaries, the minister later urged the protesting teachers to go back to their respective classes.

“If they don’t resume classes, we have no other option but to either issue an order of ‘no work, no pay’ or withdraw grant to school management committees of institutions that are shut,” he said.

Teachers under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) get paid a total of Rs 15,000 each by the Central government and the rest of the payment is paid by the state government.
