Bihar Government: The Bihar Education Department recently addressed the issue regarding extremely low attendance in many schools in Bihar. The government declared that for the students who fail to attend their classes for more than 15 days in a stretch, disciplinary action will be taken against them. this could even lead to expulsion if a proper justification is not put forward. Moreover, the government also said that they will be ‘tracking’ the students studying in government schools as many students study in private schools but also hold admission in government schools for the DBT perks. Under the DBT scheme, the government sends money to the student’s guardian for stationery items like books, pens and even uniforms.
Letter issued to district magistrates
A letter was issued by the government to all district magistrates which said, “The number of students attending schools has substantially increased across the state. However, there are still around 10 per cent of schools where students’ attendance is still less than 50 per cent It is a matter of serious concern. “All concerned District Education Officers are directed to select such five schools in their respective areas and communicate with the parents of absentee students to improve their attendance,” The letter also said, “And in the case of those students who remain absent for 15 days at a stretch without any justified ground, should be expelled from school. Besides, students studying in government schools must be tracked also. Officials must examine whether students are studying in two schools at the same time,”. Along with this, it also addressed the issue of the students enrolled in Bihar Government school but living in a different state altogether by stating, “At the same time, there is information about some students living outside the state (Kota in Rajasthan). Such students must be tracked and their enrolment should be cancelled… The department provides DBT benefits to students of Rs 3,000 crore annually…,”
