Lucknow, UP: With the technical education department adopting a revised price structure for private colleges offering degree and diploma in technical programmes, the tuition fees charged by private engineering and technical institutes in UP are expected to change.
Accordingly, the standard tuition fee set for undergraduate engineering courses in private colleges offering degree in UP is Rs 55,000, and those offering diploma in engineering is Rs 30,150. However, this is not a cap on the tuition fee to be charged by the institutions, clarified the admission and fee regulatory committee (AFRC) of the technical education department.
Currently, a private college’s engineering course tuition ranges from Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 1.65 lakh. In Uttar Pradesh, there are more than 750 private colleges that provide technical education.

Institutions who disagree with the amended fee structure have been invited to submit a reasonable proposal together with their expenditure information no later than July 23, according to AFRC secretary Rajesh Chandra. According to Chandra, “Fee of such institutions will be established after assessment by the committee.”
Institutions will also need to submit consent letters to the department if they agree with the altered fee slab. It will be presumed that an institution follows the normal fee fixing if it doesn’t give a consent letter (either agreeing or disapproving).
Officials said the revision was done considering the fact that no fee was hiked for the last two years owing to Covid-19 pandemic. The last fee revision came in 2017-18. “Both institutions and parents are facing difficulties. We have seen a crisis time, and are trying to mitigate the loss,” said an official.
The new price slabs, which are anticipated to be more expensive than the current fee, did not sit well with teachers, though. “Technical institutions are having trouble filling seats as enrollment declines year after year. The numbers will drastically decline with the increase following the fee change, according to a senior technical education faculty member.
