The UGC initiative of a part-time PhD programme could help several working professionals who want to pursue research, but are unable to do so due to paucity of time. This choice enables the professional to take six months of offline classes while conducting their research under the guidance of a specialist.

Part-time PhD programmes will be available under the draught UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree), 2022 regulations, which were made public in March. The eligibility requirements and work evaluation will be the same as for the standard PhD. Only after receiving a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer may the applicant submit an application. In the IIT ecosystem, part-time PhD programmes are frequently offered.

Rajnish Jain, secretary of the UGC, said in a statement to Education Times that “a number of professionals working in academia as well as the corporate world have an interest in research or higher education, but are unable to do so due to a lack of time. Such experts will benefit from this provision, if they meet the requirements. Depending on the course they choose, candidates must receive the necessary credits.

“The candidates will have to finish the job under the supervision of a supervisor after finishing the course requirements,” says Jain.

“The professionals would need to complete the necessary coursework in person at the relevant university where they are enrolled in a PhD programme. For instance, a working professional enrolled in DU would have to attend classes in person for six months before they could resume their research, according to Jain.
Professionals have the option to work from home, which is increasingly common these days. Additionally, this will give them time to fulfil their organisational obligations, says Jain.

The Association of Indian Universities’ (AIU) secretary-general, Pankaj Mittal, claims that this move will benefit working professionals because they won’t have to quit their careers. At least eight pupils would report to each supervisor. Many business employees might get PhDs, giving them the opportunity to work in academia after retirement.
