PUNE: On June 15th, Dr. Mohan R Wani assumed leadership of the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), a research centre run by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, in Pune. Dr. Mohan earned his Ph.D. in Human Medicine from St. George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, England, after completing his post-graduate studies in veterinary surgery at Nagpur Veterinary College.
Dr. Wani has significantly advanced knowledge in NCCS on the control of cellular and molecular pathophysiology in critical skeletal and autoimmune illnesses, such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. According to the official statement, his team has also made contributions to the fields of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.

Dr. Wani has mentored several Ph.D., medical & veterinary students, and postdoctoral fellows. He is a recipient of several awards including the Commonwealth Fellowship, B. M. Birla Science Prize, National Bioscience Award, Tata Innovation Fellowship, etc.
In fields like Cell & Cancer Biology, Infectious Diseases & Immunology, Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, Structural Biology, and Bioinformatics, NCCS has been conducting cutting-edge research. Through its national cell and microbiological repositories, NCCS also offers significant services to the scientific community in India. By increasing fundamental and translational research through a multidisciplinary approach, as well as national and international collaborations, NCCS will continue to address the most pertinent research problems pertaining to human health and diseases, according to Wani’s statement to the media.
