IIT Mandi: The Ministry of Human Resource Development established the new, Indian Institute of Technology Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Since the incident of suicide that happened on 11th August 2023, where a student died by jumping from a building, the University Grants Commission has been imposing strict actions against criminal offences such as ragging.
IIT Mandi: Ragging incident
On Wednesday, 6th September, complaints were filed in the institution for extreme ragging that took place at the IIT Mandi. The first-year students filed an anonymous complaint about the ragging session that took place at an introductory event, where the seniors were shouting and making them stand in corners. Therefore, the institution did not take it lightly and decided to take strict action. Moreover, they said, “IIT Mandi is committed to ensuring that all students on campus feel safe and are not exposed to any form of harassment. The institute encourages students to report such incidents immediately to ensure corrective action is taken and such incidents are prevented on campus,”
Action taken against the accused
For the ragging case, 72 students have been accused. Out of the 72, 10 have been suspended for three months. Moreover, the other 62 will have to face disciplinary actions which include, a fine payment ranging between Rs 15000 and 25000, along with community service. The range will depend on the intensity of the crime. The university said, “Recently, an incident of ragging came to the institute’s notice. It was found that some B Tech students were involved in ragging freshers. Disciplinary action is being taken against 72 students involved in the incident,”
