IIT Madras: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras will set up its first overseas campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The new campus will be set up under the name Indian Institute of Technology Madras at Zanzibar. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between India and Tanzania on July 6. The Ministry of Education, Government of India, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training Zanzibar, Tanzania were parties to the MoU. Plans are in place to launch programmes at IIT Madras at Zanzibar, Tanzania by October 2023.
Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan has stated that setting up of IIT Madras in Tanzania is a major step towards globalisation og higher education. There are plans to set up two more IIT campus outside India in Kuala Lumpur and Abu Dhabi.
Strengthening South-South Cooperation
India and Tanzania have a established strategic partnership. India is aspiring to become a net security provider for small states in Western Indian Ocean. According to Minister Dharmendra Pradhan the setting up of IIT Madras at Tanzania is an example of PM Narendra Modi’s strive for South-South cooperation at global level. He further added “National Education Policy 2020 is paving the way for knowledge to become a critical element of bilateral relations as well as for advancing global good.” Under NEP 2020 there was a recommendation for top performing Indian universities to set up campuses outside India.
Campus at Zanzibar
The campus of Zanzibar will be located at a pivotal location in the African continent and will provide a much needed technical exposure to the proximate areas. The academic programs, curricula, student selection aspects and pedagogical details will be regulated buy IIT Madras while the Government of Tanzania will deal with the monetary aspects. A successful set up of this campus will be a big boost for India’s reputation in diplomatic circles. It will also be a big boost for IIT institutes, taking their global prestige to another level.
