Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is set to introduce a new psychological well-being service tailored for students, faculty, employees, and their families. This initiative will be rolled out gradually, with a comprehensive plan in place. The university aims to equip a selected group of 15 psychology students with professional training over a period of 90 days under the Dr. Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan Internship scheme. These interns, who have completed their PG diplomas from BHU, will undergo training named ‘Vishwakarma – The Skilled Counselor’, designed to mold them into proficient counselors capable of offering valuable guidance and support.
Training by Industry Experts
The training program is conducted by external industry experts from ‘Manas – The Inside Story’, an organization dedicated to promoting transformation through psychological self-awareness. Throughout the training, participants will cover essential topics crucial for effective functioning of the psychological well-being service. This includes person-centered philosophy in action, developing person-centered skills, understanding the systems and processes of psychological well-being services, and acquiring integrated skills relevant to student counseling.
Steering from the Dean’s Office
The service will be overseen from the office of the dean of students, Prof. Anupam Kumar Nema. Prof. Nema emphasized the prevalence of various psychological challenges in society, particularly affecting the mental health of today’s youth. He highlighted that the launch of such services at BHU is a significant step towards addressing these dynamic psychological issues. Furthermore, he noted that this initiative aligns with the objectives outlined in the New Education Policy 2020, which places a strong emphasis on psychological well-being.
