3rd Year BTech Student of IIT Madras Died by Suicide: Once again a case of suicide of a senior student has come to the fore in IIT Madras, Chennai. This is the second such incident in a month. Police said that a third year BTech student of IIT Madras committed suicide on Tuesday. The 20-year-old electrical engineering student from neighboring Andhra Pradesh was found hanging in his hostel room by his roommates, police said.
A police officer probing the case said that preliminary investigation revealed that the student might have a problem in concentrating on his studies and completing his academic work. He said that only after completion of the investigation and postmortem can something be said further.
The incident comes exactly a month after a post-graduate engineering student committed suicide at IIT Madras itself on February 14. He too was found dead in his dorm room.
Internal inquiry committee constituted
In a statement, IIT-Madras said: “IIT-Madras informs with deep anguish the untimely demise of a third-year Electrical B.Tech student of the Department of Electrical Engineering on March 14.”
The institute also said that the student parents have been informed. The student’s family has requested privacy. The institute further said that it expresses its condolences to the student’s family, and stands united in grief with the student’s friends and relatives.
IIT-Madras also said that an internal inquiry committee comprising elected student representatives has been constituted.The committee will look into the details regarding the death of the student. The cases of suicide of students are not new, even before this the cases of hostels of students have been coming.
