PM Modi greets doctors on Doctor’s day, praises their role

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of Doctors day Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted doctors and said, they play a major role in saving people’s lives and making the planet healthier.

History of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy

Indian Medical Association (IMA) annually celebrates National doctor’s day on July 1. Initially, National Doctor’s day was celebrated in 1991 to commemorate Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a well-known doctor and former Cheif Minister of Bengal. Dr Bidhan was also awarded Bharat Ratna for his contribution to the nation.

As per the British Medical Journal, Dr Roy was the first Medical Consultant in the Indian sub-continent and was more successful than his colleagues.

It is noted that within two years, Dr Roy become a member of the Royal Colleges of Physicians. The doctor had a goal to ensure affordable healthcare for everyone.
