West Bengal: The West Bengal Governor, CV Ananda Bose recently appointed interim vice-chancellors in seven universities. The seven Universities include West Bengal State University, Presidency University, Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, University of Burdwan, Netaji Subhas Open University and West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences. The Vice chancellors were appointed based on their “eligibility, suitability, competence, willingness and desirability”. Moreover, this action was taken by the state to deal with the many issues faced by the students.
Letter issued by the government
The letter issued by the government said “According to the West Bengal State Universities Acts, the vice chancellor shall be the principal executive officer of the university and all the other authorities of the universities shall act by the directions of the respective VCs.”. moreover, it also said, ” “The officials of the university are to execute the orders issued by the VC and they are not mandated to take orders directly from the government or to execute those without the knowledge and consent of the VC,”

The VCs appointed are as follows-
Professor Raj Kumar Kothari – West Bengal State University
Justice Subhrakamal Mukherjee- Presidency University
Prof Debabrata Basu- Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya
Prof Tapan Chanda- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology.
Prof Gautam Chakraborty – University of Burdwan
Prof Indrajit Lahiri – Netaji Subhas Open University
Prof Shyam Sundar Dana- West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences
It is also been confirmed by the sources that more interim vice chancellors will be appointed soon for nine other universities in the sate. However, it is under process and will only be implemented soon.
