VIT Bhopal imposed fine on students for reciting Hanuman Chalisa, MP govt orders probe

A minister said that the government of Madhya Pradesh has recently asked for an inquiry into a Sehore-based private institute that fined its students over reciting Hanuman Chalisa in their hostel.

A source said that some students recited Hanuman Chalisa aiming to draw the Institutes management’s attention to poor amenities at the hostel. The incident erupted prior to this week on the campus of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) Sehore district, it is situated around 70 km away from Bhopal.

While talking to the reporters on Friday, MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra said, “No fine will be charged from the private institute’s students for the recitation of Hanuman Chalisa. Sehore collector has been ordered to conduct a detailed inquiry into the entire matter.” If not in Hindustan, where else will the students recite Hanuman Chalisa, he asked.

“I have sent a message to the institute that no fine should be imposed on the students for reciting Hanuman Chalisa. The students can be advised, but no such action can be taken,” he said.

Some of the students of Btech had recited Hanuman Chalisa in the institute as a protest against the poor amenities at the hostel, the source said. Fine was imposed on seven students, they said. The institute took action after the parents of some of the students and security guards of the campus raised objections over the noise caused by the Hanuman Chalisa recitation.

“If the fine imposed on the students is not withdrawn, then 7,000 people will recite Hanuman Chalisa at the college,” warned BJP Legislator Rameshwar Sharma while opposing the imposition of the fine on the students.
