Topper of JEE main session 1, Himanshu Garg, shares preparation strategy, plans

The results of JEE Main session 1 Paper 1 were declared on Monday this week and Himanshu Garg from Delhi topped the exam along with 14 other candidates who successfully scored 100 percentile across India. Garg plans to study in IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi.

Garg’s strategy

While discussing his strategy, he said that he had a flexible routine. “I began my serious preparation for JEE in Class 11. I studied mainly for JEE Advanced as it covered both the syllabi of JEE Main and the Class 12 board exam,” Hemanshu says.

“There are some topics which are asked in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced. For them, I had to work a little extra,” adds the JEE Main topper.

“It’s less about the hours and more about the quality and quantity of what you are studying,” he says.

He did his study preparation for JEE with Aakash BYJU’s and he says that his coaching institute provided him with all the necessary materials that were relevant fir the exams. “However, coaching classes and self-study goes hand in hand,” says the JEE Main topper.

Himanshu – the curious kid

Expressing how his parents have supported him throughout Garg said, “My parents have always been very supportive of whatever career I wanted to take. They asked me to go for whatever I want”.

“I was a curious kid and was very inclined towards the sciences. In Class 10, the moment of choice came to choose between medical and engineering. I veered towards engineering as I liked Math more than Biology,” he added.

Himanshu’s past achievements

When Himanshu was studying in class 10th he scored 94%.

“I have been appearing for Olympiads since Class 9 when I qualified for NACJS (National Junior Science Olympiad). I cleared the first level and had qualified for the international team,” he said.

Moreover, In Class 10, he qualified for GSTSC and NTSC. In both Class 11 and 12, he qualified for KVPY.

Subsequently, he qualified for IOQM in Class 10 and 11, and IOQP in Class 12.

Now that he has cracked JEE Main with 100 percentile, he will be appearing for JEE Advanced and then go on to study at either IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay.

Asked about his ultimate career goal, he says, “I don’t have any particular aim yet when it comes to a field of choice but if I had to say, maybe CS.”

Tips on preparing for the exam

Securing the 100 percentile is no joke, however, future candidates can do so and Himanshu has a tip for them.

“An aspirant has a good chance of cracking any competitive exam if they have the right idea of the exam they are appearing for, coupled with the right guidance and self-realisation regarding which areas they lack in what they should improve,” he says.

Exam preparation

As we all know JEE preparation is not easy not adding upon the pandemic made it harsher than ever as people were restrained to meet with each other outing was almost no to the world and one could never even think of outside activities such as playing, camping and so on.

“The pandemic made it almost impossible to go outside. To destress, I had to resort to indoor games. I used to play table tennis and I play chess as well. Apart from that, I use music to destress,” says Hemanshu.

He also gives credit to his mother for taking care of him during the pandemic.

“I contracted some health issues during the Covid-19 pandemic and I was only able to fight back cause of my mother,” says the JEE Main topper.
